A stray pony found roaming in Chatham-Kent was successfully captured and rehomed after a collaborative effort involving Chatham-Kent Animal Control, a local horse enthusiast, and the police. The pony, later named Peanut, was placed on a stray hold by Pet and Wildlife Rescue when no owner came forward.

Responding promptly to a call received at 5 a.m. on Sunday, Chatham-Kent Animal Control took swift action to secure the loose pony. With police assistance, the officers were able to connect with a nearby individual willing to temporarily house the pony until further arrangements could be made.

Despite efforts to locate the owner by posting notices, nobody came forward to claim Peanut. Myriam Armstrong, the executive director of Pet and Wildlife Rescue, explained that due to space limitations for large animals at the shelter, they expedited the process of finding a permanent home for the young pony.

Kate and Ryan Irelan adopted Peanut on Thursday, providing him with a new home where he now resides with an older miniature donkey for companionship. Armstrong emphasized the importance of adhering to zoning regulations for owning livestock, as horses and ponies should only be kept on properties designated for agricultural use to ensure their safety and well-being.

Armstrong advised potential animal owners to familiarize themselves with local bylaws before acquiring livestock to avoid situations where impoundment may occur if the animals are not permitted in certain areas. She stressed the significance of allowing animals to remain in familiar environments for their overall welfare and happiness.
