Almost half a year following the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, a tragic incident unfolded as gunfire erupted in a tent where Ritaj Rihan’s third-grade class was being held. The Education Ministry confirmed that the nine-year-old girl was fatally shot in front of her classmates, causing significant emotional distress among them. Palestinian health and education authorities attributed the shooting to Israeli forces in Beit Lahia, a town in the northern Gaza Strip.

Ritaj’s mother, Ola Rihan, overwhelmed with grief, received condolences from visitors at their tent. She expressed her deep sorrow, describing her daughter as her everything and “a piece of my heart.”

Tent schools like the one Ritaj attended have become a symbol of the fragile hope Palestinians hold for the future amidst the ongoing fear they face. While students can resume a semblance of formal education, the guarantee of safety remains elusive.

In the aftermath of the war, Palestinians in Gaza continue to endure violence and precarious conditions. Despite a decrease in the intensity of hostilities, airstrikes and gunfire persist, endangering residents. Humanitarian organizations assessing the progress of the ceasefire initiative reported that, six months later, the optimistic expectations remain largely unmet.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) responded to inquiries about Ritaj Rihan’s tragic death, emphasizing their efforts to neutralize Hamas’s military capabilities while adhering to international law to minimize civilian casualties.

In southern Gaza, Dr. Jodie Pritchard, a Red Cross emergency physician, noted a decrease in mass casualties during the ceasefire, allowing for more extensive follow-up treatments for patients, particularly amputees receiving prosthetics.

Despite some improvements in access to humanitarian aid and food, Gaza still faces the risk of famine. International efforts, including the entry of aid trucks, aim to alleviate the dire conditions, but challenges persist, with shortages and high prices hindering relief efforts.

NGOs have raised concerns about ongoing hostilities and the failure to address Gaza’s complex crises effectively. The ceasefire, while reducing the intensity of attacks, has not brought lasting peace or stability to the region, according to a joint assessment by humanitarian organizations.

Journalists in Gaza have been targeted, with reports of deliberate attacks by Israeli forces resulting in casualties among media personnel. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) condemned the targeting of journalists, citing cases filed before the International Criminal Court.

Despite the threats and challenges they face, journalists in Gaza remain committed to their work, determined to convey the reality of the situation in the region.
