At the Wales Home in Cleveland, Quebec, Pascal, a nine-year-old miniature horse, captivates residents with his stylish appearance and charming tricks like waving and bowing. Pascal, owned by Anne Caroline Coutu, is part of the animal therapy organization, Toutous Poilus, where he is one of the 50 animals rotating for visits to provide emotional support at various facilities like residences, care homes, and hospitals in Quebec’s Eastern Townships and greater Montreal area.

Accompanied by other animals like guinea pigs, doves, cats, bunnies, and dogs, Pascal remains the star attraction at these visits. Residents, such as Polly McClure Gifford, are deeply moved by Pascal’s presence, which triggers nostalgic memories of their past experiences with animals, like a pony on a family farm.

Lysanne Hamel, the activities coordinator at Wales Home, emphasizes how the animals bring back fond memories for residents who miss having pets of their own. The therapeutic benefits of Toutous Poilus inspired Hamel to collaborate with Coutu on a picture book called “Lily Courtepointe,” based on the animal troupe’s heartwarming interactions during their visits.

Jean Coates, a resident at the care home, initially not an animal lover, had a change of heart after interacting with the animals, including Pascal, who displayed remarkable patience and obedience. Coutu, Pascal’s owner, highlighted the extensive training Pascal underwent to acclimate him to various environments, ensuring his comfort and well-being during visits.

Toutous Poilus, established by Coutu in 2010, now conducts 10 to 12 weekly sessions across Quebec with the help of dedicated volunteers who assist in transportation, grooming, and veterinary care. Annie Lavariere, a volunteer, acknowledges the profound impact animals have on people, emphasizing their non-judgmental nature that transcends social and health boundaries, providing comfort and joy to all.
