The emotional night in Kingston saw lead singer Gord Downie bid a poignant goodbye to a packed Rogers K-Rock Centre, now known as Slush Puppi Place, as he delivered unforgettable performances of hits like “Ahead by a Century” and “Bobcaygeon” for the last time. The band, which had been active since 1984 and released 13 studio albums, concluded their touring journey with this significant hometown show on August 20, 2016. Downie’s battle with terminal brain cancer, diagnosed in December 2015, tragically led to his passing just over a year later at the age of 53.
In honor of the 10th anniversary, CBC will rebroadcast The Tragically Hip’s final concert on Saturday, titled “The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration.” While guitarist Rob Baker acknowledged the importance of the event to fans and the band’s legacy, he emphasized that for him, it is more about remembering their cherished career rather than celebrating.
Langlois revealed his initial apprehension and unease before the final performance, a sentiment shared by the band members. However, a pivotal moment occurred when Downie’s optimism and enthusiasm for the show uplifted Langlois and set a more positive tone for the evening.
Despite concerns about Downie’s health affecting his performance, the band witnessed his physical improvement throughout the farewell tour. Looking back, Langlois and Baker admitted they underestimated the profound impact of their last show, realizing its significance only in the aftermath as they observed the widespread communal response.
While affirming that The Tragically Hip will not reunite, the band recently released a new album titled “Live July 22 – August 20, 2016,” featuring recordings from their final tour. Baker highlighted the healing power of music, sharing a personal anecdote about how music can facilitate emotional healing and provide solace during difficult times.
