The Ontario government will implement new regulations for public job advertisements starting on January 1, 2026, affecting employers with over 25 employees. The changes, part of the Employment Standards Act, mandate that job postings include salary information within a $50,000 range. Employers must also disclose the use of artificial intelligence in their hiring processes and refrain from requesting Canadian work experience. Additionally, they must notify applicants of hiring decisions within 45 days after the final interview.

Kathryn Tremblay, owner of Altis Recruitment, praised the government’s efforts to enhance transparency and fairness in hiring practices. However, she questioned the potential impact of the new rules on job seekers. Tremblay noted that similar measures in British Columbia, introduced in 2023 to address pay equity, have shown modest progress in narrowing the gender wage gap.

Expressing concerns about the broad salary range allowed in postings, Tremblay doubted whether the transparency on AI usage would alleviate worries about bias in recruitment processes. With rising unemployment in Ontario, she feared that the regulations might burden employers already facing challenges.
