Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, has decided to delay his upcoming performance in Marseille after French authorities expressed their intention to prohibit the concert. This choice by Ye follows a recent ban from entering the U.K., where he was set to headline the Wireless Festival in July, due to backlash surrounding his history of anti-Semitic comments.
In a statement on the social platform X, Ye expressed, “After thoughtful consideration, I have chosen to postpone my Marseille show in France until further notice.” He emphasized his commitment to making amends and acknowledged the time required to understand his sincerity.
The rapper, who altered his name in 2021, was slated to perform at Marseille’s Stade Vélodrome on June 11. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez affirmed his office’s commitment to exploring all avenues to prevent the show from proceeding as planned.
Earlier this year, Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan opposed Ye’s visit to the culturally diverse city, citing its extensive history of immigration. Payan stated, “Kanye West is not welcome at the Vélodrome, our temple of community and home to all Marseillais. I refuse to let Marseille be a platform for those who endorse hatred and unapologetic Nazism.”
Ye has faced significant criticism for his anti-Semitic remarks and expressions of admiration for Adolf Hitler. He previously released a song titled “Heil Hitler” and promoted a swastika T-shirt for sale on his website. Notably, Australian authorities revoked Ye’s visa in July following the release of the controversial single.
In January, the 48-year-old musician issued a public apology in the Wall Street Journal, attributing his actions to his bipolar disorder and a prolonged manic episode. In his recent X message, Ye took full responsibility for his actions, emphasizing his dedication to his fans and expressing anticipation for future performances.
