Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych, a strong contender for a medal at the upcoming Milan-Cortina Winter Games, was disqualified from competing on Thursday after rejecting a last-minute request from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to not wear a helmet paying tribute to over 20 athletes and coaches who lost their lives in Ukraine’s conflict with Russia.
The decision was made just 45 minutes before the event, concluding a three-day confrontation where Heraskevych knew the risk of being excluded from the Games for defying the rules against making political statements on the field of play.
The International Bobsled and Skeleton Federation criticized his choice to wear the helmet, stating that it violated the Olympic Charter and Guidelines on Athlete Expression.
Although Heraskevych used the helmet during training, the IOC requested him to switch to a different helmet for the races. They proposed compromises such as wearing a black armband or displaying the helmet after the race, but Heraskevych stood firm in his decision.
Expressing his disappointment, Heraskevych mentioned feeling discriminated against as other athletes had expressed themselves without facing similar repercussions. He filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) but missed the competition. The IOC allowed him to stay at the Olympics as an athlete but not as a competitor.
President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, condemned the IOC’s ruling, emphasizing that sports should promote peace and not cater to aggressors.
IOC president Kirsty Coventry tried to mediate the situation but failed to reach a consensus with Heraskevych. Tears welled up in Coventry’s eyes post their meeting, underscoring the emotional turmoil of the situation.
Despite the ongoing controversy, the IOC stood by its decision, citing the need to maintain rules and order in sports. Heraskevych’s chance to compete in the Games seems bleak, even after his appeal to CAS.
The IOC’s stance has sparked criticism from fellow athletes, with Ukrainian skier Kateryna Kotsar expressing her dismay on social media. The inconsistency in the IOC’s handling of athlete expressions has also been highlighted by Heraskevych, who pointed out other instances where athletes were allowed to display personal messages.
While Heraskevych’s Olympic aspirations have been shattered, his determination to stand by his beliefs remains unwavering, despite the consequences.
