Italian skier Federica Brignone has completed her remarkable journey back to the top by securing her first Olympic gold medal in the women’s super-G event. Brignone, aged 35, conquered the challenging Trofane course with a time of 1:23.41, less than a year after enduring severe injuries to her left leg that necessitated surgeries and extensive rehabilitation.
Following Brignone on the podium were Romane Miradoli of France and Cornelia Huetter of Austria in the silver and bronze positions, respectively, as the latter part of the field prepared to start their runs. Brignone’s victory marked her as the oldest female gold medalist in women’s alpine skiing and added to her collection of four Olympic medals, including silver in super-G and bronze in the team event at Beijing 2022, as well as a bronze in super-G at Pyeongchang 2018.
Competing in foggy conditions with challenging visibility, Brignone showcased precision and speed that eluded many other top contenders. American downhill champion Breezy Johnson faced a setback during her run, catching her pole on a gate and losing balance but managing to recover. Several other notable athletes, including Italy’s Sofia Goggia and 2018 Olympic gold medalist Ester Ledecka of Czechia, encountered difficulties on the treacherous course.
Brignone, one of Italy’s flag bearers at the opening ceremonies, overcame lingering leg pain from her previous injury with the help of curler Amos Mosaner, who carried her on his shoulders to allow her to wave the flag. The crowd erupted in cheers as Brignone crossed the finish line, reflecting the host country’s enthusiasm at the 2026 Games. Lindsey Vonn, a fellow skier, lauded Brignone’s remarkable comeback on social media, praising her incredible achievement.
