An early morning fire on Boxing Day forced nearly 40 guests to evacuate a motel in Nanaimo, B.C. Authorities were alerted before 3 a.m. about the incident at the Value Lodge Motel on Nicol St. Seven individuals were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
Motel owner Aohan Cui confirmed that 36 people were displaced due to the fire, leading to the indefinite closure of the establishment. Cui expressed the unfortunate reality of facing the worst-case scenario, emphasizing that the building was now unsafe for habitation.
Resident Arynne Hempstock, a long-time tenant at the motel, recounted the harrowing experience of witnessing the fire unfold. She described the chaotic scene as firefighters worked to evacuate guests through thick smoke and flames, with the roof eventually collapsing into a neighboring apartment.
Following the incident, some displaced residents received temporary accommodation at a local hotel with government aid. Hempstock highlighted the motel’s close-knit community, where residents, including retirees and workers, supported each other.
Another resident, Elizabeth Manson, detailed her frantic efforts to alert fellow guests and guide them to safety as the fire rapidly spread through the building. Her daughter commended her mother’s courageous actions, noting her asthma and the risks she took to save lives.
Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog acknowledged the city’s activation of emergency support services, providing temporary shelter to affected residents. The province extended emergency assistance beyond the standard 72-hour period, ensuring access to essential resources for those impacted by the fire.
Mayor Krog underscored the broader housing crisis, pointing out the challenges faced by marginalized individuals in finding suitable accommodations. He stressed the need for improved housing solutions and community support to address the ongoing homelessness issue in the region.
