Flight attendants working on Air Canada Express flights are currently voting on whether to authorize a strike as their union reports that negotiations have hit a standstill. The Canadian Flight Attendant Union, representing approximately 1,000 flight attendants, is seeking a strike mandate after unsuccessful discussions with Jazz Aviation on key issues despite nine months of talks and involving a mediator. The union emphasized the importance of a strong strike mandate to convey the seriousness of the unresolved matters to Jazz Aviation.
A spokesperson for Jazz Aviation affirmed the company’s commitment to reaching a resolution at the negotiating table without disrupting its operations. Due to the impasse in negotiations, the company is pursuing the appointment of a conciliation officer in discussions with the Canadian Flight Attendant Union. Jazz Aviation, which operates Air Canada Express flights, is owned by Chorus, not Air Canada.
Union Vice President Chris Schliep acknowledged progress on certain fronts in recent months but highlighted significant unresolved issues such as wages, ground work compensation, and improvements recognizing the job’s impact on members’ lives. The union stressed the need for fair recognition of the work and responsibilities of Jazz flight attendants, citing discrepancies with industry standards and recent industry agreements.
The union also advocated for its members to be acknowledged as safety professionals for their duties in ensuring passenger safety. Safety concerns were underscored following a tragic incident involving Air Canada Express Flight AC8646 at LaGuardia Airport in March, resulting in the loss of both pilots.
Marsha Walters, president of the Canadian Flight Attendant Union, emphasized that safety starts with fair working conditions, proper rest, and respect for flight attendants responsible for passengers’ well-being every day. The voting on the strike mandate is set to conclude on Friday at noon, following recent strike actions by WestJet flight attendants and Air Canada flight attendants over the past year. The timing of potential strike action by Air Canada Express flight attendants, if the strike mandate is approved, remains uncertain.
