When Hudson Williams arrived in Toronto on Thursday, the atmosphere on King Street transformed into a celebratory scene. Mobile phones were raised, fans erupted with excitement, and there was a frenzy of posters and selfies. Some devoted fans had even camped out for up to 12 hours just to catch a glimpse of the star of “Heated Rivalry” and secure a ticket to his premiere at TIFF Lightbox.

Williams graced the city for a special event and the debut of his upcoming project, “Yaga,” a provocative mystery series inspired by Slavic folklore set to start streaming in October. Fans of Williams are in for a treat as he takes on not one, but two roles in the show.

Filmed earlier this year on Vancouver Island, “Yaga” follows a detective summoned to a small coastal town in search of a missing heir from a wealthy fishing family, only to unravel a web of dark secrets. The series boasts a stellar Canadian cast, including Noah Reid from “Schitt’s Creek,” Carrie-Anne Moss from “The Matrix,” Clark Backo from “Letterkenny,” Sheila McCarthy, and the original “Anne of Green Gables” star, Megan Follows.

During the world premiere at TIFF, CBC News captured the essence of the evening. While Williams remained silent to the media, Moss, his co-star, expressed her confidence in his performance. The event showcased not only the fervor for Hudson but also a deep sense of national pride in the Canadian talent involved in the production.

Reid, who portrays the detective with a playful twist from his “Schitt’s Creek” character, commended the collaborative and supportive nature of the Canadian creative community. Backo, playing a local detective, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the growing support for Canadian productions.

“Yaga” originated from a play by Kat Sandler at Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre in 2019 and marks a significant moment for Canadian storytelling. Follows emphasized the importance of creating unique and diverse narratives within the Canadian industry, celebrating the richness of talent and stories emerging from the country.

The series, set to premiere on Crave next month, features Moss in the role of a seductive professor entangled in the intriguing mystery. Sandler’s direct offer to Moss was irresistible, leading to her enthusiastic participation in the project.

In conclusion, the premiere of “Yaga” not only marks a milestone for Canadian television but also showcases the depth of talent and diversity within the industry. The series promises to captivate audiences with its compelling narrative and exceptional performances.
