Canadian speed skater Will Dandjinou finished fifth in the men’s Olympic short track 1,500 meters event on Saturday, following a fourth-place finish in the 1,000 meters in Milan two days earlier. Despite being a strong contender for a medal in both races, Dandjinou lost his position for a podium finish during the final laps of the 1,500 meters after a contact incident with South Korea’s Shin Dong Min.

Dandjinou expressed his disappointment, stating that he was bumped out of contention, but he remains determined to become an Olympic champion in the future. Analyst Michael Gilday noted that the bump significantly affected Dandjinou’s speed during the crucial last laps of the race.

Jens van ‘T Wout of the Netherlands clinched the gold in the 1,500 meters with a time of 2:12.219, securing his second victory after winning the 1,000 meters earlier. South Korea’s Hwang Dae-heon took the silver, and Latvia’s Roberts Kruzbergs claimed the bronze, while Dandjinou finished in fourth place.

Another Canadian skater, Steven Dubois, faced challenges after falling during the race and finished in sixth place. Dubois, who had advanced to the final due to a ruling that he was impeded by another skater, expressed his disappointment but remains optimistic about his performance in the upcoming events.

Dandjinou, who did not qualify for the previous Olympics, has since established himself as a dominant force in the sport and is set to compete in the men’s 5,000-meter relay. With a strong track record on the ISU World Tour, Dandjinou is aiming to achieve multiple victories at the current Games.

In the women’s events, Canadian skaters Courtney Sarault, Kim Boutin, and Florence Brunelle advanced to the quarterfinals of the 1,000 meters, with Sarault securing a spot in the 3,000-meter relay final alongside her teammates. The women’s 1,000-meter final and relay final are scheduled for the upcoming days.
