Abdul Raziq Khan, alongside his mother, launched a cozy family-owned restaurant in 2021, focusing on fostering a community spirit that emphasizes giving back. Known as Mama Khan, the restaurant in Montreal’s Plateau-Mont-Royal district actively engages in various initiatives to combat food insecurity.

Despite their dedication to supporting those in need, Khan was taken aback by an incident on Christmas Eve where a group of eight diners, claiming to be visitors, left without settling their bill of $160, citing high prices. This was an unprecedented event for Khan, who expressed concern for his staff’s safety, particularly a young waiter aged 19, when confronted by the group.

For a small establishment like Mama Khan, every dollar is vital, especially during slower periods, as Khan highlighted the significance of the unpaid bill amid a $1,000 sales day. Stressing the importance of community support, Khan mentioned the absence of external funding, with all restaurant earnings channeled back into community projects.

Mama Khan’s community outreach includes operating a soup kitchen midweek and distributing free meals at various locations every Friday. Customers at the Pakistani cuisine eatery have the option to pay it forward by covering a meal for someone in need.

Following the incident, Khan intends to implement additional measures to prevent future occurrences and is considering filing a police report. While cautioning fellow restaurant owners to remain vigilant, he shared footage of the incident on social media to raise awareness.

In a heartwarming turn of events, Shahryar Ahmed, a friend of Khan’s younger brother from high school, stepped up to cover the unpaid tab, viewing it as a gesture of goodwill and a means to support struggling restaurant owners, especially during festive seasons.

Ahmed hopes his generosity will inspire others to transform negative experiences into positive outcomes. Khan, overwhelmed by the support received, mentioned receiving donations, including a $1,000 contribution and a generous tip for the affected waiter, which will be reinvested into community welfare initiatives.

Grateful for the outpouring of assistance, Khan looks forward to sharing the positive impact with his mother, expressing her anticipated joy.
