The son of Hollywood director Rob Reiner will not be subject to the death penalty for allegedly killing his parents in Los Angeles last year, according to U.S. prosecutors who made the announcement on Tuesday.

If convicted, 33-year-old Nick Reiner could face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, as stated by Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman during a press briefing.

Hochman mentioned that his office extensively reviewed the case, including consulting with the families of Rob and Michele Singer Reiner and considering mitigating factors in favor of Nick Reiner.

Prosecutors not seeking death penalty in Nick Reiner case

Nick Reiner, who made a brief appearance at a court hearing on Tuesday morning, has twice entered a plea of not guilty.

The death penalty was initially an option due to the circumstances of the case, including the lying-in-wait accusation, multiple victims, and the use of a knife as a deadly weapon. However, California has not carried out an execution in two decades, and Governor Gavin Newsom halted the practice in 2019.

Reiner’s lawyer emphasizes mental health issues

Reiner’s defense attorney, Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene, supported the prosecutors’ decision.

Greene stated, “Nick suffers from a severe mental illness and has a history of struggling with self-medication. His situation underscores the challenges faced by individuals with significant mental health issues in accessing necessary treatment and support.”

“The loss experienced by the Reiner family and their loved ones cannot be undone. Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time,” Greene added.
