In the spring, farmers globally strive to plant seeds and apply enough fertilizer to support the growing season. Failure to do so could result in surging food prices and reduced crop yields for farmers.

The current closure of the Strait of Hormuz poses a significant threat to this process. With approximately one-third of the world’s seaborne fertilizer passing through the strait, fertilizer prices have surged. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization has issued a warning about the potential for a worldwide food crisis. Marcia Brown, who specializes in food and agriculture coverage at Politico, joins us to elaborate on this issue.
