Day 9 at the Milano-Cortina Olympics holds promise for Canada as they aim for their first gold medal. Moguls skiing legend Mikaël Kingsbury is in contention for the top spot in his final Olympic appearance. Additionally, Canada has several podium hopefuls in various skiing events today.
The day kicks off with Mikaël Kingsbury competing in the men’s dual moguls event at 4:30 a.m. ET. After narrowly missing out on gold in the traditional moguls event, Kingsbury has another chance in the dual moguls, a new addition to the Olympic program. Known for his dominance in this discipline, Kingsbury is poised to secure Canada’s first gold of the Games. His main competitor, Ikuma Horishima from Japan, will be looking to challenge Kingsbury’s quest for gold.
Julien Viel, another Canadian contender, is also eyeing a podium finish after a strong performance in the traditional moguls event. The competition will feature athletes skiing side-by-side, with the highest scorer advancing in each round. The event culminates in the finals for the gold and bronze medals.
In women’s freestyle skiing, Maïa Schwinghammer faced elimination in the dual moguls, while Megan Oldham and Naomi Urness advanced in the big air event. Canadian skier Val Grenier will also be in action in the women’s giant slalom. The event includes two runs to determine the final standings.
Snowboarder Éliot Grondin, who narrowly missed gold in the men’s event, will compete in the mixed team event alongside Audrey McManiman. The competition format involves four riders going down the course simultaneously.
Ski jumper Abi Strate aims to continue her stellar season with a strong performance in the women’s large hill event. Strate, who has been on an impressive streak, is seeking to secure Canada’s first individual medal in ski jumping.
Other notable events to watch include the Canadian men’s hockey team facing France, curling matches featuring Canada against China, figure skating pairs short program, and speed skating women’s 500m race. Additionally, snowboarding slopestyle qualifying rounds will see Canadian athletes in action.
