Just a week and a half after the establishment of a new domestic violence unit in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, a tragic incident unfolded as a father took the lives of eight children, including seven of his own, while injuring two women in Shreveport. This devastating event marked the deadliest mass shooting in the United States in over two years, as revealed during a press briefing on Monday.
Expressing profound sorrow, Caddo Parish Sheriff Henry Whitehorn remarked, “None of us could have foreseen that our community would be struck by such heart-wrenching tragedies so soon after.” The officials emphasized the gravity of the situation, urging the community to rally behind the affected family members.
Addressing the somber aftermath, an official noted, “At this moment, three mothers are grappling with immense anguish, while a father mourns the loss of his child.” Stressing the seriousness of domestic violence, the community was reminded of the dire repercussions when signs are ignored.
The victims, comprising three boys and five girls aged between three and eleven, were identified as Jayla Elkins, 3; Shayla Elkins, 5; Braylon Snow, 5; Khedarrion Snow, 6; Kayla Pugh, 6; Layla Pugh, 7; Markaydon Pugh, 10; and Sariahh Snow, 11. The tragedy unfolded early on Sunday when the suspect, identified as Shamar Elkins, 31, used an assault-style weapon in two separate residences, perpetrating the horrific act.
Shamar Elkins fatally shot the children and wounded two women, including Shaneiqua Elkins, his wife and mother of four of the children, and another woman believed to be the mother of three of his children. Both women remain hospitalized in critical condition.
Amid the chaos, Shaneiqua’s sister managed to escape with a child by leaping from the roof and alerting authorities as the violence unfolded. Shamar Elkins met his demise following a police chase, with the circumstances surrounding his death yet to be clarified.
Although no prior instances of domestic violence involving Shamar Elkins were known to the authorities, he had a previous conviction for illegal use of weapons in 2019. It was reported that Shaneiqua and Shamar Elkins were in the process of separating, with a court appearance scheduled for Monday. The family recounted Shaneiqua’s devoted nature as a mother who cherished her children’s accomplishments and attentively prepared them for family gatherings.
In response to the tragedy, community members have paid tribute to the victims by creating a makeshift memorial outside the residence where the children lost their lives, adorned with balloons and stuffed animals in their memory.
