Environment and Climate Change Canada has projected that 2026 is likely to rank among the top four warmest years on record. A recent analysis of global temperatures indicates that scientists are highly confident that 2026 will join the list of the hottest years ever documented. The increase in carbon emissions, primarily due to the burning of coal, oil, and gas, is the key factor driving the planet’s rising temperatures. However, besides human activities, the exceptional global temperatures in recent years can also be attributed in part to the significant El Niño event in 2023-2024, compounded by ongoing human-induced global warming.
The analysis forecasts that this year’s global average temperature will fall between 1.35 C to 1.53 C above pre-industrial levels. There is a 12 percent probability of surpassing the crucial 1.5 C threshold, which countries like Canada, committed to the Paris Agreement, aim to avoid. The Paris Agreement aims to limit global warming to below 2 C above pre-industrial temperatures while striving to restrict the increase to 1.5 C, with the ultimate objective of achieving global net-zero emissions by 2050.
Keeping global warming below 1.5 C significantly reduces the risks associated with extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, and heavy rainfall and flooding, as highlighted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The IPCC serves as the primary international body for evaluating climate change scientifically.
While surpassing 1.5 C in a single year may not equate to a failure to meet the Paris Agreement’s long-term temperature goal, it does indicate a concerning trend for the planet. This year is anticipated to mark the 13th consecutive year with global temperatures exceeding 1 C above pre-industrial levels. Global temperature changes are typically measured against the pre-industrial baseline from 1850 to 1900, representing the earliest period with reliable temperature observations over land and sea.
Alongside Environment and Climate Change Canada’s forecast, the nonprofit organization Berkeley Earth also anticipates 2026 to follow a similar trend to 2025, which was the fourth-warmest year since 1850, ranking behind only 2024 and 2023 in terms of global temperatures.
