British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s chief of staff has resigned following the controversy surrounding the appointment of Peter Mandelson as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States, despite Mandelson’s connections to Jeffrey Epstein. Morgan McSweeney stated that he took responsibility for advising Starmer to appoint the 72-year-old Mandelson to the crucial diplomatic role in 2024. McSweeney acknowledged that the decision to appoint Mandelson was a mistake, expressing that it has negatively impacted their party, country, and public trust in politics. He emphasized that he advised the Prime Minister to make the appointment and accepted full accountability for that recommendation.

Starmer is currently under scrutiny and facing criticism for his judgment after recently disclosed documents, part of a substantial release of Epstein files in the U.S., suggested that Mandelson may have shared market-sensitive information with Epstein during his tenure as the U.K. government’s business secretary amid the 2008 financial crisis. The government led by Starmer has committed to disclosing its own correspondences and other relevant materials associated with Mandelson’s appointment to demonstrate that Mandelson provided misleading information to officials.

Despite being a former cabinet minister, ambassador, and esteemed figure in the Labour Party, Mandelson has not been formally charged or detained. Metropolitan Police officers conducted searches at his London residence and another affiliated property on Friday, stating that the investigation is intricate and will necessitate a substantial amount of additional evidence collection and examination.

Starmer had previously dismissed Mandelson from his ambassadorial role in September due to earlier revelations regarding his ties to Epstein. However, critics argue that the recently uncovered emails from the U.S. Justice Department have raised serious doubts about Starmer’s decision-making abilities and assert that he should have exercised better judgment before appointing Mandelson in the first place.
