Democratic lawmakers from the House oversight and government reform committee announced on Tuesday their intention to probe whether the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) withheld information regarding an abuse allegation against President Donald Trump from the publicly available Epstein files. The committee stated that they suspect the DOJ failed to disclose FBI records concerning a woman who alleged in 2019 that she had been assaulted by Trump several decades ago.

Congressman Robert Garcia, the committee’s ranking member, affirmed that the DoJ seemed to have unlawfully kept back FBI interviews with the accuser who leveled serious charges against President Trump. Garcia emphasized the urgent need for the DOJ to share these records with Congress and the public under the oversight committee’s subpoena and the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

After reviewing unredacted evidence logs at the justice department on Monday as part of the ongoing investigation into the handling of the accusation against Trump, Garcia urged transparency and accountability in revealing any evidence of potential misconduct by the President.

In response, the DOJ refuted any claims of improper withholding of documents, asserting that all responsive materials have been disclosed unless falling under specific categories such as duplicates, privileged information, or part of an ongoing federal investigation.

The back-and-forth exchange follows an NPR investigation revealing that certain Epstein-related files, including FBI interviews and notes from discussions with a woman accusing Trump of past sexual abuse when she was a minor, were not made public as required by law. The New York Times also reported that several FBI memos summarizing interviews related to the woman’s allegations against Trump were missing from the released materials.

The woman, who came forward with her accusation in 2019, alleged that Trump had made unwanted sexual advances towards her in 1983 when she was 13 years old, with Epstein acting as the facilitator. Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing concerning his association with Epstein.

Moreover, the DOJ removed numerous documents from the Epstein files due to privacy concerns, particularly regarding the identities of women accusing Epstein of sex trafficking and abuse. Claims of potential criminal behavior involving Trump and former President Bill Clinton were also redacted, with the Justice Department highlighting that unsubstantiated and sensationalist allegations were included in the removed documents.

During his state of the union address, Trump did not address the Epstein case or the released files, while Congressman Garcia reiterated the need for a thorough investigation to seek justice for the survivors and ensure accountability.
