Prunella Scales, widely recognized for her role as the sharp-tongued Sybil Fawlty in the iconic British sitcom “Fawlty Towers,” passed away at the age of 93, her children announced on Tuesday. Scales, who had been battling dementia, peacefully departed at her residence in London on Monday.

Her sons, Samuel and Joseph West, shared that despite her retirement due to dementia after an illustrious acting career spanning nearly 70 years, she remained at home, with “Fawlty Towers” being her last watch before her demise.

Scales began her career with early film appearances in the 1952 adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice” and the 1954 comedy “Hobson’s Choice,” later transitioning to television with the 1960s sitcom “Marriage Lines.” In “Fawlty Towers,” she portrayed the frustrated yet commanding spouse of the inept Basil Fawlty, played by John Cleese.

The show, conceptualized by Cleese from his previous work on “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” alongside his then-wife Connie Booth, featured Scales in a pivotal role. Despite only producing 12 episodes between 1975 and 1979, “Fawlty Towers” remains a timeless classic and is often lauded as one of the finest British sitcoms.

Reflecting on Scales’s talent, Cleese described her as a brilliant comedic actress and a kind-hearted individual, reminiscing about her flawless performances in various scenes of “Fawlty Towers.” The show’s enduring popularity led to stage adaptations, including a recent production in London’s esteemed West End.

Scales’s legacy extended beyond “Fawlty Towers,” with notable portrayals such as Queen Elizabeth II in “A Question of Attribution” and Queen Victoria in the solo stage performance “An Evening with Queen Victoria.” Married for 61 years to actor Timothy West, who passed away at 90 in November 2024, she leaves behind a rich artistic footprint.

In addition to her acting career, Scales and West embarked on a heartfelt journey in the documentary series “Great Canal Journeys” from 2014 to 2019, receiving acclaim for candidly portraying Scales’s dementia. Her son, Samuel West, a prominent actor and director, continues to uphold the family’s theatrical legacy.

Prunella Scales is survived by her sons, stepdaughter Juliet West, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The entertainment industry mourns the loss of a true talent, with tributes pouring in for the beloved actress who brought joy to countless viewers.
