YouTube TV subscribers are no longer able to access Disney-owned channels like ABC and ESPN due to a failed content distribution agreement between the two parties. The dispute has also led to the disappearance of other channels such as Disney Channel, FX, and Nat Geo from Google’s pay TV platform.
In a recent blog post, Google’s pay TV platform disclosed that Disney carried out its threat to suspend content during the negotiations. The impasse could potentially impact the coverage of various sports events, including college football games on Saturdays, as well as NBA, NFL, and NHL games.
YouTube, the leading internet TV provider in the U.S. with over nine million subscribers, has been embroiled in this conflict. Viewers have been alerted to the situation through on-screen notifications in recent weeks.
According to YouTube, Disney’s tactic of threatening a blackout was aimed at securing higher prices for its subscribers. YouTube pointed out that Disney’s action also promotes its own streaming services such as Hulu + Live TV and Fubo.
Expressing disappointment, YouTube stated that it is encouraging Disney to engage in constructive dialogue to restore the networks to YouTube TV. To compensate affected subscribers, YouTube has promised a $20 credit if Disney content remains unavailable for an extended period. The base subscription fee for YouTube TV stands at $82.99 per month.
Disney, on the other hand, has accused YouTube TV of not offering fair rates for its channels and depriving subscribers of valuable content. Disney emphasized the significance of upcoming sports events and criticized Google’s alleged market dominance tactics. Despite the conflict, Disney has expressed a commitment to resolving the situation promptly.
