After a recent trans-Atlantic flight, Pavel Talankin, a recent Academy Award winner, faced a situation where his Oscar went missing. Talankin, who co-directed the acclaimed documentary “Mr. Nobody Against Putin,” was required to check his award at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport for a flight to Frankfurt, Germany. This decision was made by a Transportation Security Administration agent who deemed the Oscar a potential weapon.

Due to a lack of a suitable bag, the TSA placed the Oscar in a box and sent it to the cargo hold of the plane. Unfortunately, upon arrival in Frankfurt, the Oscar was nowhere to be found. Following an outcry sparked by David Borenstein, Talankin’s co-director, the airline Lufthansa announced on Friday that they had located the missing Oscar. Lufthansa assured that the award was safe and under their care in Frankfurt, expressing regret for the inconvenience caused and apologizing to Talankin.

The collaboration between Talankin and Borenstein on the award-winning documentary “Mr. Nobody Against Putin” had garnered significant attention. The film, which shed light on a Russian teacher’s efforts to document pro-war activities in Ukraine, secured the Academy Award for best documentary in March. Talankin, known as the “Mr. Nobody” in the film, made a poignant plea on stage during the acceptance speech, urging an end to wars for the sake of the future generations.

While details about the circumstances surrounding the missing Oscar are still under review by Lufthansa, the TSA has not yet provided any responses to inquiries made on Friday.
