Whistle Bend, located in Whitehorse, has become the fastest-growing neighborhood with over 4,300 residents. The area is bustling with construction activities, showcasing numerous half-built homes, dirt lots, and the constant noise of bulldozers. The neighborhood boasts a diverse population, uniting individuals from various income levels, including young families and newcomers to the country.

As the territorial election approaches, attention is drawn to the needs of Whistle Bend beyond housing. Residents are advocating for improved transportation infrastructure and enhanced local amenities like stores and services. With the neighborhood expanding rapidly, it will now be represented by two Members of the Legislative Assembly, introducing Whistle Bend South and Whistle Bend North for the first time.

Residents like Eoin Sheridan express concerns about the lack of essential services. Although Whistle Bend is home to the largest long-term care facility in the territory and a new elementary school, everyday necessities such as shops and grocery stores are missing. Connectivity for active transportation is also deemed inadequate, with Sheridan highlighting safety issues for cyclists.

One of the primary routes, Mountain View Drive, often experiences traffic congestion, prompting calls for road improvements to ensure safer cycling conditions and alleviate vehicle jams. The recent opening of Yukon Mart, the sole business in the area, offers some basic grocery items, but residents desire a more self-sufficient community with additional services.

Murat Ozen, co-owner of Yukon Mart, acknowledges the need for more businesses and plans to open a bar to fulfill residents’ socializing needs. All three political parties are vowing to collaborate with the City of Whitehorse to attract businesses to Whistle Bend and facilitate their establishment. The Yukon Party aims to widen Mountain View Drive and assist in planning a second road bridge across the Yukon River to accommodate future developments.

The Liberals are focused on enhancing active transportation routes, while the NDP pledges to improve public transportation and explore innovative solutions like staggered work hours to ease congestion. As Whistle Bend continues to evolve, residents and politicians alike are striving to create a more vibrant and self-sustaining community.
