Israeli forces conducted a raid in a village in southern Syria, resulting in a confrontation with residents and the death of at least 13 people, according to Syrian officials. The incident occurred amidst ongoing conflicts in the region and as a ceasefire in Gaza remains fragile.
Syria’s Foreign Ministry described the attack as a “horrific massacre,” emphasizing that women and children were among the casualties. The Syrian state news agency reported that Israeli forces entered the village of Beit Jin with the intention of apprehending local men, but heavy gunfire ensued when residents resisted, leading to the evacuation of numerous families from the area.
Israel stated that the operation targeted suspects affiliated with the Jamaa Islamiya militant group in Beit Jin, who were allegedly planning attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and rockets against Israel. Israeli forces claimed they were met with gunfire from other militants, resulting in injuries to six soldiers. In response, Israeli troops utilized air support and confirmed the detention of all suspects, along with the elimination of several militants, although evidence supporting these claims was not provided.
A local official, Walid Okasha, asserted that those killed were civilians, including a man, his family members, and another man who had recently gotten married. Firas Daher, a resident of Beit Jin, recounted that the raid commenced at 3 a.m. local time, with residents offering slight resistance using light weapons. Israeli troops retaliated with drones, helicopters, and heavy machine gun fire, targeting any movement within the village.
Israeli forces have maintained control over a segment of southern Syria following the downfall of former Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. This area, previously monitored by the UN under a 1974 disengagement agreement, has been subject to regular Israeli operations targeting suspected militants. Israel has also conducted numerous airstrikes on Syrian military installations and advocated for a demilitarized zone south of Damascus.
