Australian Paralympic gold medalist Paige Greco has sadly passed away at the age of 28. The Australian Paralympic Committee and Australian cycling federation issued a joint statement announcing her sudden death at her home in Adelaide due to a medical emergency on Sunday.
Her mother, Natalie Greco, expressed the family’s deep sorrow, highlighting Paige’s impact with her kindness, determination, and warmth that brought immense joy and pride. While devastated by the loss, they are immensely proud of her representation of Australia.
Born with cerebral palsy, Greco made history by clinching the first gold medal at the delayed Tokyo Paralympics in 2021, setting a new world record in the women’s C1-3 3,000-metre individual pursuit. She also secured bronze medals in the road race and time trial events.
Greco’s remarkable career included multiple world championship titles and World Cup medals. Transitioning from Para athletics to cycling, she quickly made her mark with outstanding performances, setting world records and winning gold and silver medals at the 2019 track world championship.
Paralympics Australia CEO Cameron Murray expressed deep sadness over the loss, describing Greco as one of the brightest young stars in the Australian Paralympic Movement. He praised her exceptional athletic achievements but emphasized her character, noting her kindness, determination, and ability to inspire and support those around her.
