The city of Toronto will raise the Palestine flag at city hall for the first time next week. The flag-raising ceremony is scheduled for November 17 following approval from city staff in response to a request from the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) to commemorate the State of Palestine’s Independence Day on November 15.

Palestinian activist Bashar Alshawwa, based in Toronto, expressed optimism about the event, emphasizing its symbolic significance. He believes that this gesture will inspire others in Canada to advocate for human rights, equality, and justice concerning the Palestinian cause.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow’s press secretary, Braman Thillainathan, clarified that the flag’s display was authorized by the city’s protocol office, not by the city council or the mayor. Thillainathan noted that the city staff managed the flag-raising process based on a policy established by the council in 1999.

A city spokesperson emphasized that flying a flag does not indicate the city’s endorsement of a particular cause but rather acknowledges the citizens or groups making the request. The city also raises flags of nations recognized by the federal government on their national days or special occasions.

The initiative to raise the Palestine flag was attributed to the Canadian government’s decision to recognize Palestine, as announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney at the United Nations General Assembly. This move was confirmed by Global Affairs Canada with the city of Toronto.

According to ICJP lawyer Shane Martinez, while the flag-raising ceremony holds symbolic value, it is significant for Palestinians in Toronto and across Canada. Martinez highlighted the importance of visibility in combating anti-Palestinian sentiments and promoting Palestinian resilience against oppression.

Local Jewish organizations in Toronto were contacted for comments but were unavailable. In the previous year, Toronto City Hall hosted more than 60 flag-raising events.

The flag-raising event symbolizes a significant step towards recognizing the Palestinian cause and promoting inclusivity and diversity in Toronto.
