The Canada women’s national soccer team has slipped down the FIFA rankings, now positioned at No. 10. They began the year at No. 6 but have steadily dropped in each ranking update this year, including the most recent end-of-year ranking released on Thursday.
The decline in ranking is attributed to the team’s four consecutive losses since August. They were defeated 1-0 by both Switzerland (ranked 25th) and the Netherlands (ranked 11th) in October, followed by 3-0 and 1-0 losses to Japan (ranked 8th) in November. The team ends the year on a five-game losing streak and has not scored a goal in 454 minutes, with their last victory being a 4-1 win against Haiti in June.
Under the leadership of coach Casey Stoney, the Canadian women achieved a record of 6 wins, 6 losses, and 1 draw this year. Assistant coach Natalie Henderson emphasized the need for improvement, stating, “We need to raise our standards on and off the pitch.”
Canada has consistently maintained a spot in the FIFA top 10 since March 2016, with their highest ranking being No. 4 in March 2018 and their lowest at 13th in various years. Spain retains the top position in the rankings, followed by the United States and Germany climbing to No. 3. Other notable movements include Brazil rising to No. 6 and North Korea surpassing Canada to claim the 9th position.
