A planned community ground search in Kitchener for Eli Wood, a 25-year-old who has been missing for over six weeks under suspicious circumstances, has been called off. Wood disappeared following a fire that engulfed his home in Kitchener on October 19, with investigators from the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) determining the fire as arson and suspecting foul play in Wood’s disappearance.

The decision to cancel the search, as explained in a press release shared on social media, was primarily due to safety concerns. Organizers cited safety risks for searchers and the challenging search conditions caused by heavy snowfall, making it unlikely to uncover anything useful. They mentioned consulting with the WRPS, who advised against a K9 search under the current conditions.

Despite the search cancellation, organizers remain committed to supporting Wood’s family and friends, with potential plans for a future candlelight vigil and donation boxes to assist the family. They are also staying in communication with WRPS for any updates on the case.

Wood’s family, as relayed through WRPS, expressed gratitude for the community’s support and urged against sharing unverified information on social media, emphasizing the importance of trusting updates directly from the police to avoid hindering the investigation.

The family acknowledged the efforts of investigative teams and encouraged anyone with information to share it with the authorities instead of spreading it on social platforms.
