Residents of the Victoria encampment in Kitchener are concerned about safety following a tent fire that occurred over the weekend. Jamie Stief, a community advocate for the homeless, emphasized the importance of winter safety supports and education in light of the incident.

Stief collaborates with organizations such as the Social Development Centre Waterloo Region and the Unsheltered Campaign to assist individuals living on the streets. She expressed that no one should have to endure such living conditions and stressed the significance of providing housing and warmth to everyone.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, but Stief mentioned that some individuals in winter tent settlements resort to using candles for heating. She highlighted the necessity of proper housing and warmth for all individuals.

The Kitchener Fire Department responded to the fire incident, which did not result in any injuries. The cause of the fire is not under suspicion, and authorities quickly extinguished the flames.

Stief raised concerns about the limited options available to those living on the streets who feel unsafe in shelters or motels due to reported violence and trafficking issues. She emphasized the need for safety strategies for individuals living in tents, including ways to escape in case of a fire.

Stief shared safety tips with new encampment members and underscored the growing number of individuals living in such conditions. Despite the enclosed fire pit at the Victoria encampment providing some warmth, she acknowledged that systemic solutions are essential for addressing the underlying problems.

Ryan Maeck, the Region of Waterloo’s emergency management advisor, stressed the importance of preparedness for unpredictable weather conditions. He recommended creating household emergency plans and utilizing warming spaces available in the region to ensure the safety of vulnerable family members during winter.

Maeck encouraged everyone to plan for emergencies and stay informed about warming spaces in the region to protect themselves and their loved ones during harsh weather conditions.
