In a joint statement on Monday, the NHL and NHL Players’ Association expressed satisfaction with the trial events held at the new hockey arena for the upcoming Milan-Cortina Olympics. Officials from both the league and the union visited the Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena in Italy to observe games testing the ice surface, while final touches are being made to dressing rooms and other facilities. The women’s competition is scheduled to start on February 5, followed by the men’s on February 11.

Acknowledging the challenges that come with a new ice surface and an arena still under construction, the NHL and NHLPA emphasized their commitment to addressing any remaining issues promptly. They pledged to closely monitor the progress and offer guidance to ensure that the tournament and playing conditions meet the standards expected by top players worldwide.

Despite initial concerns about the completion of the rink just weeks before the Games, officials in Milan, including International Ice Hockey Federation president Luc Tardif, are optimistic about the participation of NHL players as planned. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, while noting that there are ongoing challenges due to the venue’s construction status and the new ice, expressed confidence that necessary work will be completed on time.

Bettman, speaking in Buffalo, where the NHL draft will be hosted in June, mentioned that the test events proceeded satisfactorily based on received reports, but emphasized the importance of finalizing pending tasks. He reiterated the NHL’s willingness to assist and provide expertise as needed, emphasizing the significance of NHL players competing at the Olympics.

Bettman anticipates gaining a clearer understanding of the situation in Milan once he arrives, emphasizing the importance of players competing at their best during the Olympic Games. Ultimately, decisions regarding player participation rest with the IOC and the IIHF.

In conclusion, the NHL and NHLPA are closely monitoring the progress at the Olympic hockey arena in Milan, ensuring that all necessary preparations are completed for the upcoming Games.
