The Jewish community in the Greater Toronto Area is grieving and urging action against antisemitism following the tragic incident at Bondi Beach in Australia on Sunday. Two gunmen opened fire at a Jewish holiday gathering, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 individuals, including a child, and injuring over two dozen others. One of the attackers is deceased, as confirmed by New South Wales authorities.

Authorities in Australia have labeled the shooting as a terrorist act and are investigating potential accomplices. The shocking events in Sydney have sparked concerns within the GTA, with Rabbi Levi Gansburg calling for unity and support for the affected community.

Rabbi Gansburg expressed personal sorrow over the loss of Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a victim of the attack whom he knew well. He highlighted that the event led by Rabbi Schlanger aimed to spread positivity and kindness during the holiday season.

The devastating news has left Toronto’s Jewish community not only saddened but also fearful in light of the escalating antisemitism locally and globally, according to Sara Lefton from the UJA Federation. The community is on edge as they prepare for a festive holiday amidst the current climate of hate.

Noah Shack, CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, emphasized the importance of solidarity and vigilance to prevent future attacks. He stressed the looming threat faced by Jewish Canadians and urged a united front against extremism and hatred.

Law enforcement agencies across the GTA have announced heightened security measures in Jewish neighborhoods during Hanukkah. Police forces in Toronto, York, Durham, and Peel are increasing patrols and monitoring potential threats to ensure the safety of the community.

Premier Doug Ford expressed condolences for the tragic incident and solidarity with the global Jewish community. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow condemned antisemitism and assured the Jewish community of the city’s unwavering support and protection.

As the community mourns the loss and braces against rising antisemitism, the call for unity and resilience grows stronger in the face of adversity.
