Authorities in New Mexico have commenced a search at Jeffrey Epstein’s former high-plains ranch, where he and his associates are accused of sexually abusing women and girls, as per state officials.
New Mexico, governed by Democrats, is taking action based on new details from documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice in January, which include an allegation that Epstein ordered the burial of two foreign girls’ bodies near the secluded property.
The search comes after New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez’s recent decision to reopen the investigation into the alleged criminal activities of the late sex offender at the ranch located 48 kilometers south of Santa Fe.
In a statement, the New Mexico Department of Justice expressed its commitment to keeping the public informed, supporting survivors, and pursuing the truth wherever it may lead.
Witnesses observed government vehicles, including one with a paw-print symbol indicating it may have been carrying animals, leaving the ranch on Monday. State police and a county fire and rescue vehicle were also seen in the vicinity.
Former U.S. president Bill Clinton stated that had he been aware of Epstein’s crimes during their association, he would have reported him. Clinton provided a closed-door testimony to a Republican-led House oversight committee regarding the investigations and prosecutions of the deceased sex offender.
The previous Epstein investigation in New Mexico was closed in 2019 at the request of federal authorities. There has never been a comprehensive inquiry into the alleged assaults by Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and visitors to the ranch.
Last month, New Mexico became the first state in the U.S. to establish a “truth commission” to uncover potential public corruption that enabled Epstein to operate discreetly at the ranch for 26 years until his demise in 2019.
In 2023, Epstein’s estate sold the property to Texas businessman Don Huffines, who renamed it San Rafael Ranch.
The new owners are cooperating with the investigation and have granted access for the search, according to the department.
The release of additional files on January 30 shed light on Epstein’s connections with politicians, business figures, and scientists whom he invited to the ranch.
According to Reuters/Ipsos polling, most Americans perceive the Epstein case as emblematic of wealthy and influential individuals seldom facing consequences.
