Julian de Guzman and Melissa Tancredi, with a combined total of over 200 appearances for Canada, have been inducted into the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2026.
De Guzman, the first Canadian to play in Spain’s La Liga, was a pioneer in his field. As a former captain of the Canadian team, he earned 89 caps between 2002 and 2016. Known for his adept skills as a technical midfielder, de Guzman was praised for his ability to control the ball and create plays with his teammates.
Tancredi, a formidable forward, accumulated 125 caps for Canada from 2004 to 2017. She played a crucial role in several significant matches for the Canadian women’s team, contributing to some of their most notable achievements.
Canada Soccer president Peter Augruso commended both de Guzman and Tancredi for not only their on-field accomplishments but also for their roles as inspirations and ambassadors for the sport. Their impact on Canadian soccer culture and the future generation of players is enduring and significant.
The induction ceremony for de Guzman and Tancredi will take place later this year during national team home matches.
De Guzman, who made his first appearance for Canada at the age of 20, went on to captain the team 25 times and held the record for the most caps by a Canadian male player for a period. He participated in multiple World Cup qualifying campaigns and showcased his skills in six CONCACAF Gold Cups, earning accolades such as tournament MVP in 2007.
On the club level, de Guzman had a successful career playing for various teams in Europe and North America, culminating in his retirement with the Ottawa Fury. He now serves as the head of sport for the New York Red Bulls.
Tancredi, affectionately known as ‘Tanc,’ made significant contributions during her 125 appearances for Canada, scoring 27 goals and providing 15 assists. Her international career included multiple Olympic and World Cup appearances, with notable performances in the 2012 Olympics where she scored crucial goals for Canada.
After taking a hiatus to complete her chiropractic degree, Tancredi returned to the field and continued to lead the Canadian team. She remains an integral part of the team and has transitioned into a successful career as a chiropractor, co-owning a clinic in Vancouver.
The Canada Soccer Hall of Fame, which has honored numerous players, officials, and builders, now includes de Guzman and Tancredi among its esteemed members.
