Ariane Raedler and Katharina Huber from Austria secured the gold medal in the team combined event at the Milano-Cortina Olympics on Tuesday. Despite initially leading in the first run, American Mikaela Shiffrin finished fourth, with teammate Breezy Johnson taking the lead from her. Shiffrin, known for her 108 World Cup victories, has not won an Olympic medal in seven consecutive races.
After claiming two golds and a silver in her first two Olympics, Shiffrin failed to secure a medal in any of her six races at the Beijing Games four years ago. Germany’s Kira Weidle-Winkelmann and Emma Aicher won the silver medal, while Paula Moltzan and Jacqueline Wiles from the U.S. clinched the bronze.
Val Grenier from St-Isidore, Ontario, completed the downhill in 1:39.10, placing Canada in 19th position, 2.51 seconds behind Johnson’s leading time. Laurence St-Germain from Saint-Ferréol-les-Neiges, Quebec, finished with the seventh-best time in the slalom, contributing to Canada’s 13th-place finish.
In the same event, Toronto’s Ali Nullmeyer and Cassidy Gray from Invermere, British Columbia, were disqualified during Nullmeyer’s slalom run.
