Israeli forces have initiated an operation to capture a crucial town in southern Lebanon, currently held by Hezbollah fighters. This move comes just before significant discussions between Israeli and Lebanese government representatives. Lebanon’s foreign minister has expressed intentions to negotiate directly for a ceasefire during these talks, despite escalating tensions. Meanwhile, Israel has made it clear that ceasefire discussions will not be entertained while Hezbollah remains opposed to engaging in negotiations with Israel.
On the ground, the Israeli military has encircled the town of Bint Jbeil, initiating a ground offensive with the intention to gain full control in the coming days. The strategic importance of Bint Jbeil, a stronghold for Hezbollah, is emphasized by the determination of the fighters holed up inside to resist fiercely. Additionally, an incident involving an airstrike on a Red Cross center in Tyre, southern Lebanon, resulted in a casualty, with Israel claiming responsibility for targeting a “Hezbollah terrorist” in the area.
Amid ongoing clashes in Lebanon, Israel’s operation against Hezbollah is not linked to the delicate Iran-U.S. ceasefire. The U.S. ambassador to Lebanon will host a meeting in Washington between Israeli and Lebanese envoys, focusing primarily on ceasefire discussions. Despite internal opposition within Lebanon, efforts are being made to establish a separate negotiation track for reaching a ceasefire agreement.
