Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych resumed training with his banned helmet on Wednesday, a day before his race at the Milan Cortina Games, despite the International Olympic Committee’s call for him to express his message differently.
Heraskevych arrived at the Olympics with a custom helmet displaying images of over 20 Ukrainian athletes and coaches who lost their lives during the conflict with Russia that began after the 2022 Beijing Games. The IOC informed him on Monday night that wearing the helmet in competition violated their policy against political statements on the Olympic stage. Nonetheless, Heraskevych persisted in wearing the helmet during training sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday, asserting that it did not breach any IOC regulations.
The IOC’s spokesman, Mark Adams, stated that they would engage in further discussions with Heraskevych on Wednesday to clarify what forms of expression would be permissible. Other Ukrainian athletes, including luge athlete Olena Smaha and skier Dmytro Shepiuk, have shown solidarity with Heraskevych by conveying messages of remembrance during their events.
The helmet, crafted by a Ukrainian artist weeks ago, has sparked debate over allowing tributes during competitions. Heraskevych pointed out instances where athletes paid homage to loved ones after their performances. Despite the IOC’s offer for Heraskevych to wear a black armband as a compromise, he expressed disinterest, favoring the helmet’s symbolism.
Heraskevych, a strong contender for a medal in Cortina, showcased consistent performance in his training runs leading up to the Olympic competition. The IOC emphasized the importance of dialogue and understanding in resolving the situation, acknowledging the significance of Heraskevych’s message while aiming for a fair and inclusive environment for all athletes.
