Canada’s Rachel Homan suffered a narrow 9-8 defeat to American Tabitha Peterson in the women’s curling round-robin match during the Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo. Despite having the hammer in the 10th end, Peterson secured the win with a crucial open draw for two points.
Homan’s attempt at a double-takeout on her final throw fell short, leading to Canada’s record dropping to 1-1 while the American team improved to 2-1. Both countries have been consistent participants in curling since its reinstatement in the official Olympic program in 1998. Canada boasts a strong record with two gold medals, a silver, and two bronzes, while the U.S. women’s team is yet to claim any medals.
Reflecting on the historic victory over Canada, Peterson expressed her excitement, acknowledging the intense battle between the two teams. Homan, alongside her Ottawa-based team of Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew, and Sarah Wilkes, managed to secure a two-point lead early on but faced pressure from the Americans in subsequent ends.
The strategic play continued, with the American team opting for a single point in the eighth end to maintain a lead. However, Canada rallied back, scoring three points in the ninth end to briefly take the lead at 8-7. This marks Homan’s third consecutive Winter Games appearance, with past performances falling short of medal contention.
Notably, Canada hasn’t clinched a gold medal in the women’s team event since Jennifer Jones’ victory in 2014. The intense competition between Canada and the U.S. showcased the high stakes and skill on display in the curling competition at the Winter Olympics.
