In 2015, April Reign, an activist and writer, initiated the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag. Presently, she avoids watching award shows live, citing the recent Emmys as a prime example. Monday night’s Primetime Emmy Awards broadcast faced criticism for its lack of diversity among the winners. Notably, all 10 televised awards were claimed by white actors, excluding actors of color from major acting categories. Reign characterized this as a stagnation rather than a regression.

The supporting actor and actress awards in a limited series were distributed last week at the Creative Arts Emmys, but these wins did not alter the diversity landscape. By the next morning, #EmmysSoWhite was trending on social media platforms, with users expressing discontent towards the Television Academy.

Reign, who introduced the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag in 2015 due to the absence of non-white acting nominees, highlighted that while some changes have been made since then, the recent Emmy results warrant attention. She emphasized that the lack of diversity is not an isolated incident but a recurring pattern embedded in the institution’s voting practices.

A transparency report released by the Television Academy in February revealed that 67% of its members in 2026 were white. Despite this, the academy noted a consistent growth in membership among diverse groups, including biracial, multiracial, East Asian, and Southeast Asian individuals, as well as women, non-binary, transgender, and intersex individuals.

Reign stressed the importance of addressing representation issues beyond award season, urging a focus on the diverse voices involved in the creative process from the outset. She emphasized the need to question casting decisions and storylines early on to prevent recurring diversity discussions during award ceremonies.

While actors of color did not secure wins during the televised portion of the Emmy Awards, Hiro Murai made history as the first Asian filmmaker to win best directing for a comedy series with “Widow’s Bay.” This marked a significant achievement amidst the lack of diversity in acting wins.

Compared to previous years, the 2026 Emmys saw a decline in representation even before the ceremony began, with only 17 performers of color receiving acting nominations. This downward trend contrasts with the diverse nominations seen in 2021, where all lead and supporting acting winners were white, sparking the resurgence of the #EmmysSoWhite hashtag.

The Emmy Awards have faced scrutiny for their diversity track record over recent years, with varying levels of representation among winners. Despite efforts to promote diversity and creativity, ongoing discussions about representation and inclusivity persist within the Television Academy.
