The British Columbia government has implemented new regulations to reduce the burden on doctors and prevent the spread of illness by limiting when employers can request sick notes. According to the government, these regulations state that employers cannot require a sick note for the first two health-related absences of up to five consecutive days within a year.

Health Minister Josie Osborne highlighted that the new rules, effective since Wednesday, aim to allow sick individuals to stay home for recovery while easing the administrative workload on physicians. Dr. Lisa Gaede, a family physician and representative of Doctors of B.C., emphasized that sick notes have placed a significant strain on healthcare providers, and this change will enable them to focus more on patients in need of medical assistance.

The decision to revise the requirements for sick notes was influenced by feedback from healthcare providers, who indicated that common minor illnesses like flu or cold typically resolve within five days. Labour Minister Jennifer Whiteside stressed the inconvenience of seeking a sick note when unwell and emphasized that unnecessary medical visits divert resources from patients requiring urgent care.

The Canadian Medical Association reported that B.C. doctors issued approximately 1.6 million sick notes last year. The government clarified that health-related absences cover situations where an employee or their immediate family member is ill or injured.

Healthcare professionals across the province have advocated for a reduction in administrative tasks, including the issuance of sick notes, to prioritize patient care. The elimination of sick note requirements was a central pledge in the B.C. NDP’s election campaign, leading to the introduction of Bill 11 to amend the Employment Standards Act regarding sick notes in April. The government committed to implementing these changes before the onset of the fall respiratory illness season.
