A 13-year-old boy is being hailed for his heroic act of rescuing his mother and two younger siblings after they were swept out to sea off the coast of Australia. Austin Appelbee swam a distance of four kilometers to shore to seek help when the family encountered difficulties during their outing.
Initially attempting to use an inflatable kayak that began taking in water, Austin abandoned the kayak and removed his life jacket to facilitate his swim. Battling rough seas for approximately four hours, he reached shore and raised the alarm at 6 p.m., expressing his determination to keep swimming despite the challenging conditions.
The family, vacationing from Perth, found themselves in distress while using hired kayaks and paddle boards as strong ocean currents pushed them out to sea. They were eventually located by a search helicopter at 8:30 p.m., clinging to a paddleboard after drifting 14 kilometers away from their starting point in Western Australia.
Insp. James Bradley commended the boy’s bravery, emphasizing that Austin’s resolute actions were instrumental in saving his mother and siblings. Joanne Appelbee, the mother, shared that sending her eldest son for help was a difficult decision, but one she had to make to ensure the safety of all the children.
Despite facing challenges such as the onset of darkness and uncertainty, the family remained positive and supportive of each other until their rescue. All family members were assessed after the ordeal but did not require hospitalization, with the mother expressing gratitude that all her children made it through the harrowing experience.
