Canadian curlers Brett Gallant and Jocelyn Peterman showcased their prowess in the mixed doubles competition at the Winter Olympics, securing notable victories on Thursday.

They started with a 6-3 triumph against Norway, followed by an impressive 7-2 win over reigning champion Italy, positioning them at the top of the round-robin standings with a flawless 3-0 record.

Reflecting on the intense competition, Gallant emphasized the significance of each victory due to the high level of competition among equally skilled teams, foreseeing a challenging path ahead as they progress towards the playoffs.

In the games, Canada maintained control throughout, dominating early on with a five-point lead in the first end against Italy, silencing the home crowd at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium.

Peterman noted the thrill of hearing the crowd’s reaction and the satisfaction of quieting the opposing fans with their strong performance. Gallant credited their exceptional start to five impressive shots that set the tone for the match against the formidable Italian team.

Italy’s team struggled with draw weight, leading to uncharacteristic errors by Mosaner and Constantini. Despite Italy scoring a single point in the second end, Canada’s consistent performance ultimately ended Italy’s 22-match winning streak.

Amidst some missed opportunities, Gallant and Peterman excelled in crucial moments, with Peterman executing a pivotal raise double-takeout for a significant lead. The duo displayed resilience and skill, making strategic plays when under pressure.

Both teams utilized their mid-game power plays effectively, with Canada’s Peterman sealing the victory with a precise draw in the eighth end. Despite some statistical variations, Canada’s overall performance surpassed that of Norway, securing another well-deserved win.

Having previously secured a commanding victory over Czechia, Gallant and Peterman maintained their winning streak, sharing the top spot with Great Britain’s Dodds and Mouat. The competition continues with mixed doubles matches leading up to the medal rounds, followed by traditional team play.

Canada’s representation in the women’s and men’s categories further adds to the anticipation, with Rachel Homan leading the women’s team and Brad Jacobs leading the men’s team, as Canada aims to replicate past Olympic success in curling.

The last Olympic gold for Canada in curling was achieved by the mixed doubles team in 2018, setting the stage for an exciting journey ahead for Gallant and Peterman in pursuit of Olympic glory.
