In Winnipeg, authorities reported an incident where a child was seized by an unknown individual in a St. Vital elementary school restroom, resulting in charges of assault and forcible confinement against a 28-year-old man, identified as a registered sex offender. The police were alerted to the situation at approximately 1:30 p.m. following a report of an unfamiliar adult intruder who had entered the school premises and encountered a student, according to Const. Dani McKinnon during a press briefing on Friday.

The school, although not named by McKinnon, was pinpointed in a memo communicated to parents by Darwin School principal Erin Enns as a kindergarten to Grade 8 institution located just west of St. Vital Centre and affiliated with the Louis Riel School Division. Subsequently, the school was put under a hold and secure protocol, which entails securing external access points.

Law enforcement officials indicated that the suspect clandestinely positioned himself in a restroom stall after gaining entry to the school. Upon a student exiting another stall, the man physically restrained the child. However, the student managed to resist the assailant and escape before promptly informing a teacher of the incident. Fortunately, the child did not sustain any physical injuries, as confirmed by McKinnon, who refrained from disclosing further details about the student, such as age or gender.

Following the altercation, the perpetrator absconded before the arrival of the police. Nevertheless, an observant individual tailing the suspect led authorities to a nearby shopping mall in the 1200 block of St. Mary’s Road, where St. Vital Centre is situated. Mall security personnel aided in locating the man in the parking lot, facilitating his apprehension.

The accused, Scott William George, aged 28, faces charges of assault, forcible confinement, and two counts of breaching child-related prohibition orders. He has a history of criminal offenses dating back to 2015, including convictions for various crimes like breaking and entering, theft, and weapons-related charges. Notably, George had previously pleaded guilty to sexual interference in 2023, resulting in a two-year sentence for the offense committed in July 2022, involving inappropriate contact with an individual under 16 years old.

McKinnon highlighted that the prohibition directive aimed to prevent George from interacting with minors or accessing locations frequented by children. She refrained from speculating on the assailant’s motives or how he gained entry to the school, emphasizing the disturbing nature of the incident.

Christian Michalik, superintendent of the Louis Riel School Division, expressed profound distress over the event, noting its profound impact on the community. While praising the bravery of the child involved, Michalik announced plans for a comprehensive review of the incident, acknowledging the need for heightened vigilance across all schools within the division.

In response to the occurrence, Darwin School has initiated support mechanisms for students and staff, with an internal team available for assistance as required. Authorities continue their investigation and urge anyone with pertinent information to contact the child abuse unit or provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers. Parents and guardians are encouraged to engage in conversations with their children about safety measures and the importance of reporting any suspicious activities to trusted adults.

The incident underscores the imperative of maintaining stringent security measures within educational institutions, as highlighted by Michalik’s assurance of enhanced vigilance at Darwin School and other affiliated campuses.
