Ilia Malinin’s dominance in figure skating was on full display at the Winter Olympics prelude. Despite his impressive performance, the United States world champion believes there is still room for improvement.
At the inaugural Grand Prix event in Angers, France, Malinin secured a commanding victory with a remarkable 40-point lead over his competitors. Renowned as the “Quad God,” he flawlessly executed five quadruple jumps in his free skate, with only a minor under-rotation marring his near-perfect routine. Yet, Malinin remains ambitious, expressing his determination to further enhance his skills and learn from this experience for upcoming seasons.
His exceptional performance extended his undefeated streak to nearly two years since his last defeat in 2023. With a total score of 321 points, Malinin outshone his closest rival, Adam Siao Him Fa, who claimed the second spot with 280.95 points. Notably, other contenders like Nika Egadze and Lukas Britschgi demonstrated their prowess, securing third and fourth places, respectively.
In a separate category, France’s ice dance champions, Guillaume Cizeron and Laurence Fournier Beaudry, triumphed in their first Grand Prix competition together. Surpassing overnight leaders Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson, the French duo showcased a mesmerizing performance, earning a total score of 211.02. This victory marked a significant milestone for Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron, who expressed their joy at debuting successfully in front of a supportive home crowd.
The Grand Prix of France serves as the initial stage of the annual Grand Prix series, leading up to the final competition in December. This event acts as a crucial platform for skaters aiming for success at the forthcoming Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
