Jeff Gerstmann chuckled in disbelief last week upon hearing the news that the iconic late rapper Tupac Shakur would be digitally featured in an upcoming video game. The veteran games journalist and commentator found the announcement quite absurd, questioning the rationale behind such a decision.

The unveiling took place during the Summer Game Fest, an annual event showcasing video game trailers and marketing stunts, where both gamers and influencers were taken aback by the unexpected inclusion of the influential American rapper and activist, who passed away in 1996.

The game, named “Stranger Than Heaven,” is currently in development by Sega’s Japan-based Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. Serving as a prequel to the well-known “Like a Dragon” series, the game unfolds over a 50-year span during the early 1900s.

However, this revelation is just one in a string of unconventional choices by the studio that have raised doubts and sparked discussions about the intentions behind utilizing Tupac’s image and legacy.

The character Shakur portrays in the game, named Amaru after his real middle name, remains shrouded in mystery as no further details were disclosed. The developers emphasized their respect for Tupac’s legacy, highlighting their collaborative effort in creating the character based on authentic footage and photographs, without resorting to artificial intelligence.

Snoop Dogg, who also features in the game alongside his son Cordell Broadus, expressed his close involvement with Tupac’s estate in bringing the late rapper’s likeness into the project. He emphasized the spiritual connection and relevance of incorporating Tupac, whose legacy continues to resonate.

Masayoshi Yokoyama, the head of RGG Studio, confirmed that they sought approval for Tupac’s inclusion from both his estate and surviving family members.

Regarding Tupac’s estate, Gerstmann noted that Snoop’s engagement in the project was less surprising, given his extensive presence in popular culture. However, he expressed concerns about the potential overuse of Tupac’s image posthumously, fearing it could diminish the artist’s mystique.

Controlled by music executive Tom Whalley, Tupac’s estate has faced controversy in recent years, with allegations of financial misconduct and disputes over the handling of the artist’s legacy. Gerstmann criticized the estate for what he perceives as a lack of regard for Tupac’s heritage.

As discussions around Tupac’s digital appearances gain momentum, Lex Luddy, an Irish-based games journalist, pointed out that RGG Studio’s reputation for creating cool games has wavered since the departure of its previous chief creative officer. The inclusion of Tupac in their latest project was deemed out of touch by Luddy, contributing to the studio’s tarnished image.

The debate surrounding digital recreations of deceased figures has intensified with advancements in AI technology, raising ethical questions about the boundaries of posthumous representation. Jeffrey Ogbar, a history professor, emphasized the historical precedent of reimagining iconic figures through various mediums, suggesting that society must adapt to evolving technologies.

Reflecting on Tupac’s portrayal in “Stranger Than Heaven,” Luddy highlighted the potential insensitivity of associating the rapper with themes of gangland crime, despite the game’s distinct setting from Tupac’s era. Ogbar lamented the overshadowing of Tupac’s politically charged early work by his later gangster rap persona, suggesting that different aspects of his legacy can be selectively emphasized.

Despite the controversies, Gerstmann praised the innovative combat mechanics of “Stranger Than Heaven” following a gameplay demonstration, hinting at a fresh and distinctive gaming experience that could capture interest beyond the Tupac-related discussions.
