British authorities reported that a mass stabbing incident on a London-bound train resulted in 10 individuals being hospitalized, with nine sustaining severe injuries that are considered life-threatening. The incident, which occurred on Saturday evening, prompted the involvement of counter-terrorism police in the investigation. The British transport police declared the situation a “major incident” and emphasized the support provided by counter-terrorism units.

The police mentioned that a national code word, “Plato,” typically used in response to potential terror attacks, was activated but later revoked. The motive behind the attack remains undisclosed as investigations continue. Chief Superintendent Chris Casey stated that inquiries are ongoing, and speculating on the incident’s causes is premature at this stage.

The assault transpired on a train heading towards Huntingdon from Doncaster to London King’s Cross. Prompt emergency responses, including armed police and air ambulances, were witnessed at Huntingdon station as the train arrived. The situation was swiftly controlled upon the train’s arrival, with law enforcement personnel seen wearing forensic gear on the platform.

Armed police were dispatched following reports at Huntingdon station, resulting in the arrest of two individuals at the scene. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed sympathy for those impacted by the “appalling incident.” The Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Paul Bristow, described the reported scenes on the train as “horrendous.”

London North Eastern Railway (LNER), responsible for operating the East Coast Mainline services, confirmed the incident’s occurrence on one of its trains and advised passengers against traveling due to significant disruptions.
