Amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the death toll continues to rise as the war enters its second month. The turmoil began with U.S. and Israeli strikes targeting Iran, leading to a chain reaction involving neighboring countries and sparking a new front in Lebanon.

The escalation of violence started on Feb. 28 with U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran, resulting in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This triggered retaliatory strikes by Iran on Israel and Persian Gulf nations housing U.S. military installations and personnel.

Despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s assertion that Iran’s president is seeking a ceasefire, Tehran refutes this claim, indicating that the conflict shows no signs of abating.

As the U.S. and Israel persist in targeting Iran and the conflict in Lebanon intensifies, numerous countries have reported casualties due to the ongoing assaults.

Here is the reported death toll from the conflict, primarily sourced from local authorities and an activist group. It is important to note that CBC News has not independently verified these figures.

Over 3,000 Fatalities in Iran

Information from the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) indicates that at least 3,519 individuals have lost their lives since the outbreak of the conflict. This includes 1,598 civilians, 1,212 military personnel, and 709 individuals whose status as civilian or military has not been determined.

Among the civilian casualties, HRANA reports that at least 244 were children. The death toll may also encompass the 104 individuals reportedly killed in a U.S. attack on an Iranian warship off Sri Lanka on March 4, as stated by the Iranian military.

HRANA has a track record of accurately documenting deaths during prior periods of unrest in Iran and relies on a network of activists for verification. The agency is actively verifying information as it arrives, with communication within Iran posing challenges.

Additionally, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies notes that the U.S.-Israeli strikes in Iran have resulted in at least 1,900 fatalities as of March 27.

According to HRANA data, more than 25,000 civilians have sustained injuries since the commencement of the attacks.
