Switzerland’s Yannick Schwaller emerged victorious over Canada’s Brad Jacobs with a score of 9-5 during the Milano Cortina Olympic Games on Saturday. This defeat marked the first loss in round-robin play for the Calgary-based team consisting of Jacobs, Marc Kennedy, Brett Gallant, and Ben Hebert.

The Swiss team started strong, securing an early deuce with the hammer and continued to score pairs in alternating ends up to the ninth, clinching the win. This match was Canada’s first game following a verbal warning issued by World Curling to team officials regarding inappropriate behavior.

In another instance, Sweden’s Oskar Eriksson stuck to his team’s stance after an incident involving a profanity-laced exchange during an on-ice discussion about “double-touching” curling stones, which garnered international attention. World Curling warned that any future improper conduct could lead to player suspensions.

Switzerland’s Benoit Schwarz-van Berkel led the charge with a stellar performance, shooting an impressive 97 per cent, contributing to Switzerland’s clinical attack. The Swiss team maintained a flawless record of 4-0, while Canada’s record fell to 3-1.

Meanwhile, in another event, Rachel Homan’s team faced challenges, sitting at a 1-3 record in round-robin play. Despite a tough start, Homan’s team, which includes Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew, and Sarah Wilkes, is determined to secure a podium finish with the help of coach Heather Nedohin and the coaching lineup.

Homan expressed disappointment over their recent performance, citing missed shots and unfortunate incidents during gameplay. However, with the support of their coaching staff and a renewed focus, the team aims to bounce back and improve their standings in the competition.

Overall, the Milano Cortina Olympic Games continue to showcase intense competition and high stakes as teams strive to secure victories and make their mark on the international stage.
