A mother from Nunavut expressed relief at being able to spend Christmas at home in Gjoa Haven with her son after a ticketing error almost left the nine-year-old stranded in Yellowknife. Millie Putuguq shared her gratitude for a stranger’s kindness in covering the $1,000 cost she faced to resolve the issue.

Putuguq and her son Cohen were at the Yellowknife airport on their way back to Gjoa Haven following a visit to Putuguq’s daughter in Calgary. Upon attempting to check in for their Canadian North flight, they were informed of a problem with Cohen’s itinerary not being found on the system.

Facing the prospect of having to purchase a new ticket at the full fare price of $1,000, which she couldn’t afford, Putuguq spent an hour on the phone with airline customer service trying to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, Jane Arychuk, who coincidentally was at the airport to deliver an item to Putuguq, overheard her distress and generously offered to purchase a new ticket for Cohen.

Putuguq initially hesitated but eventually accepted Arychuk’s offer after trying once more to resolve the matter with the airline. Ultimately, Canadian North updated Cohen’s ticket at the check-in counter, with only a nominal fee incurred for the changes. The airline spokesperson expressed gratitude for the holiday spirit displayed by Arychuk and praised the assistance provided.

Arychuk stayed by Putuguq’s side until both mother and son had their boarding passes, emphasizing her belief in helping others in need. Putuguq lauded Arychuk’s kindness as a true Christmas miracle.
