Only after a brief two-month tenure with the Paris Port Dover Pipe Band, 19-year-old Rowan Paniccia described her recent performance as the highlight of her musical journey. Taking the stage with Paul McCartney at Hamilton’s TD Coliseum, Paniccia and 27 other band members accompanied the iconic 83-year-old musician in a rendition of the Wings’ classic track, “Mull of Kintyre.”

Reflecting on the surreal experience, Paniccia expressed her astonishment at the opportunity to perform alongside McCartney. Amidst thousands of enthusiastic fans singing along, she remained focused on her performance, only allowing herself to relax and absorb the moment once the song concluded, basking in the roaring applause from the audience.

The sold-out event not only marked the grand reopening of the newly refurbished TD Coliseum but also served as the final Canadian leg of McCartney’s Got Back tour. “Mull of Kintyre” was just one of over 30 songs delivered by McCartney that evening, showcasing his enduring musical prowess.

Gord Black, the pipe band’s founder, hinted at a mysterious connection possibly leading to the band’s collaboration with McCartney, possibly linked to a personal relationship with the musician’s keyboardist. This memorable performance marked Paniccia’s fourth time sharing the stage with McCartney, with previous occurrences in Toronto dating back to 2010. Black highlighted the meticulous preparation and excitement within the band, emphasizing their readiness for the extraordinary opportunity.

Acknowledging the significance of the moment, Black ensured all 28 members, including the youngest at 12 years old, were included on stage during the performance. The band’s flawless rehearsal and palpable enthusiasm culminated in a standout performance alongside the music legend, leaving everyone involved in awe of the experience.

Paniccia shared an endearing moment when McCartney, upon disembarking his tour bus, was greeted by a welcome melody performed by the pipe band. Following the performance, McCartney displayed his appreciation by engaging warmly with the band members, leaving a lasting impression of his kindness and humility.

As the band and McCartney rehearsed “Mull of Kintyre” together during sound check, Paniccia was left speechless by the surreal nature of the moment. Expressing her awe and gratitude, Paniccia struggled to find the words to encapsulate the experience, labeling it as “really cool” and beyond description.
